207 - Piece of a head on a metal base

Ghana or Ivory Coast

This head from southern Ghana is also very well worked.

This is an average head in our collection, but a very beautiful flat head, like the preceding one. The hairstyle, which is limited to a large central tuft of hair at the top of the head, is illustrated by a cluster of pellets of earth or clay. The other elements of the face, eyebrows, mouth, scarifications (one, perpendicular between the two eyes, and one on each side, between the eye and the ear) are precisely marked. The eyes, as for the preceding flat head, are in relief. They appear closed and inflated.
