Ashanti Civilization, Ghana, in the Kwahu style
Large head, larger than natural size, of an eminent personage of the court, in fine gray terra cotta, covered with a black matte glaze. It is timeless face, a mirror of the almost evaporated serene heart, with distant eyes, almost indifferent, foreign to what they still see. The curve of the eyebrow is well delineated, as are the eyes, the nose, and the lips. The ears are shown as three large wrinkles, the face is high and proud, and the neck is powerful and broad.
On the whole, the piece is quite elegant, of a noble beauty, a seizing mix of force and serenity.
