214 - Akan or Asante funerary head

Ghana or Ivory Coast

This is a beautiful perfectly conventional head. The head is oval shaped with small vertical braids on most of its circumference, except the back of the head, where, without any decorative concern, a large opening has been made, intended for the evacuation of burning vapors and smoke emitted at the time of firing, in order to protect the piece.
The profile is fine, the edge of the nose and the lips are nicely defined, the ears small and well formed. The face is harmonious, the arch of the eyebrows surround closed eyes, the mouth is half-open, the face is regularly round, and the neck is ringed as is usual in this statuary.
