Most Akan terracotta images were made by women. The people of most areas recognize these terracotta heads as portraits. Until recently, many ethnic groups in the southern parts of this area commemorated deceased family members and royals with terracotta figural sculpture. Heads such as these, often broken from full figures, or from vessels with figurative elements, all had funerary contexts.

1227 - Anyi anthropomorphic funerary male statue

Memorial figure, Anyi peoples, Côte d'Ivoire, Early 20th century, Terracotta
Certain Anyi groups honored their dead with portraits in terracotta. This particular one depicts a court musician grasping a flattened cylindrical gong in his left hand. His right hand probably once held a clapper now broken off. Because he was less important than the kings and queen mothers for whom he played in life, his memorial figure maintains this hierarchy to the grave by being smaller than a royal figure and by standing rather than sitting.

Abusua Kuruwa are funerary vessels with projecting figures or heads representing matrilineal characters or retainers of the notable being honored. This head with its serene expression is one of three surviving from a vessel of ancient origin. Gold dust mixed in with the clay still shimmers on the surface and indicates the wealth and status of the honoree. Abusa Kuruwa are distinguished from day-to-day Akan pottery by the inclusion of figural elements.

The use of fired ceramic in funerary customs, ancestral worship and the memorialization of the deceased is both ancient and widespread in Africa south of the Sahara. The Ashante have utilized ceramics in these practices for centuries, but their customs are hardly static.

The placing of terra cotta memorial heads in sacred places (asensie) evolved out of earlier traditions. In the 19th and 20th centuries- the approximate date of this head- symbolic portrait heads were created with glossy, black, painted surfaces. Presumably these were intended to memorialize from within the descendants' homes.

While unusually small, this example is classic nonetheless. It is deftly and minimally detailed with typical tribal marks on its upturned disc-shaped face. Although there is some minor characteristic loss to a section of its base the sculpture is largely whole and in excellent condition. Although probably never steady on its integral base it was made to be a free standing object.

1913 - Akan or Asante anthropomorphic funerary female head

H. 9.5"
18th century
Akan memorial heads have a history dating to before the 16th century. They are generalized portraits of an deceased notable, here a woman with a partially shaven head and elaborate asymmetrical coiffure. Such heads were placed in variety of locations although never at the grave site: in sacred groves or indoor shrines where they were the focus of libations and ritual sacrifice. This beautiful example (Yale #114700) is likely coming from the Adansi-Fomena area of (Ghana) around the year 1850. The snail shaped knobs on the head represent gold hair ornaments worn by royalty.

1917 - Akan Kwahu anthropomorphic funerary head

Kwahu shrine heads come in a variety of sizes. The largest may exceed 60cms in height. This wonderfully abstract example is about average in height although its neck is longer than most. When I acquired it the face was largely obscured from years of ritual applications of kaolin which made the features difficult to read. Judicious cleaning of the face revealed a beautiful surface of time burnished and often-washed black ceramic. The sculptors placement of the intense, high relief eyes, nose and mouth at extremes on the tilted visage give this head a unique and startling appearance.

The history of the Fante is tied to that of the Akan Kingdom, which rose to power during the 13th century as a result of the abundance of gold found in their homelands. Over the centuries, the most powerful faction of the Akan, the Asante, emerged as a result of their control over the trade routes for gold merchants. The Asante were brutal and demanding, and as a result, smaller groups of Akan began to splinter off, moving towards the coast and into parts of Cote d'Ivoire.

These terracottas (clay images of humans) are made by women as are all items made from clay. They are used as headstones or sentimental photos may be used in European societies. They are kept in ancestral stool rooms of lineages important enough to have them, or hidden away in the houses of lesser lineages. Two elements of Akan notions of beauty are exaggerated, rings around the neck, and high foreheads. In that way they resemble the wooden dolls used for fertility (made by men because they are carved).

Fine Akan terracotta ancestral head. These well executed heads served as stylized funerary portraits and memorials for the Akan peoples of Ghana. In excellent condition with only minor chips missing from the ears. Reddish clay with some darker areas known as "fire clouding", a result of uneven temperatures in the wood-fired kilns. Displays beautifully.

Commemorative terracotta figures were created in Africa by the Akan people in southern Ghana and the eastern Ivory Coast to honour deceased chiefs and other important elders. The sculptures were typically positioned in a sacred grove close to the cemetery, where rituals would be performed with offerings of food and prayers. It was believed that the spirits of the dead lived on in the sculptures, which are also known as mma.

In Africa, clay is a material largely associated with female artists, so it is likely that a woman made this sculpture. The figure shows the ideal qualities of a ruler – a long neck with prominent grooves and well balanced features.

Fante clay vessel for medicines from Ghana. Chips and missing parts on bowl and around base, shallow crack on the surface. This pottery vessel has a cylindrical handle in the middle decorated with geometric incised motifs. This pot was unlikely excavated or dug up from an old site or grave based on the residue of sable and some oxidation on the surface. It was probably a shrine piece and was used in ritual to hold medicines or other magical elements.

Funerary heads were created by the Agni, members of the Ivory Coast's Akan civilization, in memory of a family member. The special attention a sculptor devoted to capturing specific attributes of the dead person is most evident in the figures' hairstyles or scarifications, which could be exactingly realistic or stylized. Heads that were created for people of distinction or power would be paraded around public meeting places.

Certain court duties were represented by specific hairstyles, with ornaments included in the hair. For example, priests had their hair cut in patterns, and gold traders would have one long pigtail at the side of the head to which a gold nugget would be attached. Queen mothers would have gold cups "screwed" onto tufts of their hair.

The snail shaped knobs on the head represent gold hair ornaments worn by royalty.

This terracotta head commemorated a member of a royal family who lived in what is now south central Ghana. Such sculptures, viewed as substitutes for the deceased, were installed at formal funerals, which took place days or months after the actual burial. Although regarded as portraits, they offer only a stylized resemblance to the departed, with some specific aspects such as hairstyle, a beard or pierced ears.
17th-early 18th century

6485 - Asante Akan funerary head

Stylistically similar pieces have been found in an archaeological site at Hemang (Twifo-Hemang), in southern Ghana, that was occupied from before 1690 to about 1730. The broad forehead, the semicircular eyebrows, the closed eyes, naturalistic nose and small mouth are characteristic of the Twifo style. The head bears scarification marks just below the temples. This terracotta head commemorated a member of a royal family who lived in what is now south central Ghana.

6707 - Akan or Asante anthropomorphic male head

This magnificent head is one of the most beautiful Akan terracotta heads known. The cranial deformation, practiced by the Akan people in pre-colonial times following an ideal of beauty, as well as the elaborate hairstyle identify this head as representation of a member of the aristocratic class. The rarity of the iconography of cranial deformation, archaic style and overall surface condition suggest great age.
