Most Akan terracotta images were made by women. The people of most areas recognize these terracotta heads as portraits. Until recently, many ethnic groups in the southern parts of this area commemorated deceased family members and royals with terracotta figural sculpture. Heads such as these, often broken from full figures, or from vessels with figurative elements, all had funerary contexts.

The history of the Fante is tied to that of the Akan Kingdom, which rose to power during the 13thC as a result of the abundance of gold found in their homelands. Over the centuries, the most powerful faction of the Akan, the Asante, emerged as a result of their control over the trade routes for gold merchants. The Asante were brutal and demanding, and as a result, smaller groups of Akan began to splinter off, moving towards the coast and into parts of Cote d'Ivoire.

These terracottas (clay images of humans) are made by women as are all items made from clay. They are used as headstones or sentimental photos may be used in European societies. They are kept in ancestral stool rooms of lineages important enough to have them, or hidden away in the houses of lesser lineages. Two elements of Akan notions of beauty are exaggerated, rings around the neck, and high foreheads. In that way they resemble the wooden dolls used for fertility (made by men because they are carved).

Akan Ancestoral Bust, Ghana
20th century
Fine Akan terracotta ancestral head. These well executed heads served as stylized funerary portraits and memorials for the Akan peoples of Ghana. In excellent condition with only minor chips missing from the ears. Reddish clay with some darker areas known as "fire clouding", a result of uneven temperatures in the wood-fired kilns. Displays beautifully.

3798 - Akan or Asante funerary head

Commemorative terracotta figures were created in Africa by the Akan people in southern Ghana and the eastern Ivory Coast to honour deceased chiefs and other important elders. The sculptures were typically positioned in a sacred grove close to the cemetery, where rituals would be performed with offerings of food and prayers. It was believed that the spirits of the dead lived on in the sculptures, which are also known as mma.

In Africa, clay is a material largely associated with female artists, so it is likely that a woman made this sculpture. The figure shows the ideal qualities of a ruler – a long neck with prominent grooves and well balanced features.

Chips in places, some modeling flaws.
An interesting ceramic piece depicting a hollow female bust with an oval head. The neck is beautifully ringed. The facial features as well as the hole to the back are similar to those of the Akan clay head, Nsodia. Numerous clay objects have come to light from the great Inland Delta Cultures of the Niger River and Benue River confluence and from Mali and Burkina Faso in West Africa. www.africadirect.com (U.S.A.)

H. 9.5 inches x D. 5 inches. Chips and missing parts on bowl and around base, shallow crack on the surface. This pottery vessel has a cylindrical handle in the middle decorated with goemetric incised motifs. This pot was unlikely excavated or dug up from an old site or grave based on the residue of sable and some oxidation on the surface. It was probably a shrine piece and was used in ritual to support or hold medicines or other magical elements. In stable condition besides several chips. www.africadirect.com

Funerary heads were created by the Agni, members of the Ivory Coast 's Akan civilization, in memory of a family member. Certain court duties were represented by specific hairstyles, with ornaments included in the hair. For example, priests had their hair cut in patterns, and gold traders would have one long pigtail at the side of the head to which a gold nugget would be attached. Queen mothers would have gold cups "screwed" onto tufts of their hair.

Akan memorial heads have a history dating to before the 16th century. They are generalized portraits of an deceased notable, here a woman with a partially shaven head and elaborate asymmetrical coiffure. Such heads were placed in variety of locations although never at the grave site: in sacred groves or indoor shrines where they were the focus of libations and ritual sacrifice. The snail shaped knobs on the head represent gold hair ornaments worn by royalty.
