Little is known of the Bura civilization (ca. 3rd - 11th centuries), first discovered in 1975, excavations began in 1983. Most of the archeological sites are in what is now Niger. Most of the objects dug up are terracotta heads or vessels. Many of these terracotta heads are fragments from vessels or figures.

This highly-stylized and extraordinarily preserved terracotta figure comes from a region composed of three major sites at Bura, Asinda or Sikka in the countries of Burkina Faso and Niger. Stylistically this terracotta could be located to the greater Bura complex. Clay objects such as this were found in burials and have been dated to a range of years from the 3rd to the 11th centuries.

Heads such as this were found in burials and have been dated to a range of years from the 3rd to the 11th centuries.

An interesting ceramic piece depicting a human head with a conical head a serene face characterized by the eyes in coffee-beans shape, a straight nose, a pursued mouth and arched ears. There same motifs on the head and below the mouth. Bura people of Niger or Burkina Faso are known for this type of heads used as funeral ceramics or shrine pieces.

Large chip around rim. This container shows signs of use and could be relatively old. The surface indicates that the piece comes from archeological excavation. Such pots were used as a container for water or other ritual libation. But, the hole at the button of the pot is an evidence of another unknown function of this piece.

Wrongly identified as Akan on the site... Most Akan terracotta images were made by women. The people of most areas recognisze these terracotta heads as portraits. Until recently, many ethnic groups in thesouthern parts of this area commemorated deceased family members and royals with terracotta figural sculpture. Terracotta sculptures there were first discovered in 1975 by a hunter, who noticed two figures protruding from a sandbank. His find launched an archaeological campaign by the University of Niamey, which located many more ceramic works at a site known as Asinda-Sika. Hemispherical pots and tall cylindrical vessels were buried with the opening facing down, and served to cover items of burial wealth, such as iron arrowheads, clothing, and ancestral relics. These receptacles were richly ornamented, and either decorated with facial features or surmounted by a cylindrical neck and a decorated head, such as this piece.

Excavated pieces dated back as far as the 3rd century A.D. and as recently as the 16th century, which suggests that the Bura civilization existed concurrently with other important cultures, like the Nok and the Sao.

Pottery found in Bura habitation sites was made from the same type of clay and was similarly ornamented as Bura funerary pottery, which suggests that both types were made by the same Bura potters.

Since the production of pottery in the central Sudan is usually the domain of women, the Bura terracottas were probably made by female artists. This piece was thermoluminescence tested by Laboratory Ralf Kotalla (Germany), and found to be authentic, having been fired (created) between 988 and 1328 A.D.

Little is known of the Ancient Bura Peoples. As with all ancient African Terracotta, the "Bura Civilization" takes its name from the present day area where it was found, a necropolis north-west of Niamey, the capital of Niger.

Many Bura pieces are either anthropomorphic or phallomorphic, and are often abstract. Intact figures with any detail below the neck are very rare and usually only the head survives. Ancient Bura Terra Cotta objects are typically ornate; their function is undetermined but most likely adorned large clay pots or vessels. Heads and or complete figures may have served as functional handles.

The Bura bear some relation to the Djenne Kingdom, the Koma, the Teneku and a satellite culture known as the Inland Niger Delta. Bura share certain characteristics with these other tribal groups; for our purposes, these include extensive ceramic and stone sculptural traditions. This terrific terracotta figure is excessively rare and signifies to us the lost empire of the Bura peoples. This piece depicts a human of ambiguous sex and no legs substituted by a rounded base. The elongated torso, surmounted by a round flat head with coffee-bean eyes, a large angular nose, three scarification marks on each cheek, a small mouth, an ornate hairstyle decoration. 1100-1500 AD H. 17 inches

Chips on rim to the top, body and base, scratches. A large ceramic pot with incised designs around the wall. This pot comes from the Nupe and was probably used as a ritual vessel or a container of medicines.The surface on this pot shows evidence that the pot may come from an archeological excavation which implies it could come from from Bura according to the trader's explanations.

Little is known of the Bura civilization (ca. 3rd-11th centuries), first discovered in 1975, excavations began in 1983. Most of the archeological sites are in what is now Niger. Most of the objects dug up are terracotta heads or vessels. Many of these terracotta heads are fragments from vessels or figures. This terracotta head drilled and mounted on black iron bases.
