510 - Bored terra cotta amulet

This is a very small good-luck amulet. It would have been worn around the neck, the hole being used to run a leather cord through it. It represents an ancestor in squatting position. One can still make out some well defined folds of cloth. To wear this piece around the neck would have been to protect the bearer from all accidents, diseases and other misfortunes of life, and to give the bearer a kind of assurance, a peace of mind difficult to find at this time in this region.
