146 - Small scalped figure

Sokoto

Small man in a squatting position, his hands on his knees. The piece is very damaged, but it allows us to understand the creation technique, the modeling of clay applied to a base of earth, straw and wood. The fact that the figure has been accidentally scalped (the piece of clay covering the cranium has disappeared) allows the modern observer to discover with wonder the interior of the sculpture that curiously and involuntarily resembles cerebral convolutions. It is almost an anatomy lesson, well before its time, in the African style.
