159 - Bat

Another animal statue, and the second bat (see ref. 121). This time, the animal is whole, its wings draped as if in a dressing gown, shy and reserved, it is trying to perceive what is around its blind eyes. It is calm, not gripped by any concern, making it a small but endearing Nok piece. What is surprising is the familiarity with which the Nok artists treated this type of animal and that they chose to immortalize it in clay, as if to be a witness to every type of animal around them in their daily lives.
