4210 - Nok Clay Male Figure, Ancient or Modern Replica?
H. 4 inches x W. 5 inches
Repair: some wear at edges, minor chips. Probably a fragment of a male figure with one hand on the chin another on the torso. African terracotta figures are at once some of oldest recorded sculpture from Sub-Saharan Africa but equally some of the most problematical as well. They often are difficult to place among a people or culture and equally difficult to date.

4219 - nok
An elegant and unusual terracotta fist from the ancient Nok culture of Nigeria. It measures 6” high by 2.5” wide and has some loss on the thumb. See the book Perspectives: Angles on African Art, page 135 for a similar example. 500 BC to 200 AD. Ex Ryann Willis, ex Pierre Loos, Brussels. #5823 $1500 zkta.com/

4237 - Nok anthropomorphic bust
African terracotta figures are fired at a low temperature and are subject to surface abrasion and wear, therefore details of the face or body parts and dress or jewelry may be lost through wear and age. The clay sculpture figure tradition is still being defined in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa, however this figure could well be placed in the Nigerian tradition, especially in the northern Nok complex of styles.
H. 31.5 cm
Marseilles Auctions-Room, France, October 17 2009

4238 - Nok anthropomorphic head
This figure shares certain stylistic elements with figures from northern Nigeria, the famous Nok complex of terracotta figures. The diamond-shaped eyes and posture relate it stylistically to figures often found among the Nok culture. Also, the fact that the figure is shown wearing a ceremonial hairstyle with chignon to the back is another common Nok element.

Origin: Northern Nigeria

www.artofancientafrica.com (U.S.A.)

4831 - Nok female head
5th century BC-2nd century AD
Gift of funds from Darwin and Geri Reedy 2002.27.16
This delicate terra-cotta head is from the Nok culture, one of the oldest civilizations south of the Sahara. It is a fragment of a figure and would most likely have been proportionately oversized in comparison to its body. Once the figure was finely sculpted, it was placed in a pit and fired at a very high temperature. The molding of the face, with its bulging, elongated eyes, flared nostrils, and open mouth, is representative of the Nok style. Another prominent feature is the hairstyle, a sign of high status, carefully modeled into four protruding shapes.
Minneapolis Institute of Arts www.artsconnected.org

4832 - Nok headless female bust
5th century B.C.--A.D. 2nd century
Gift of David and Sara Lieberman 2001.198.28
The Nok people, one of the oldest civilizations from Sub-Saharan Africa, inhabited the central region of Nigeria, probably from around the 5th century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D. Nok culture is known primarily through its highly sophisticated sculpted terra-cotta figures. Given their antiquity and aesthetic appeal, they are highly sought by European and American collectors. Most of the genuine pieces currently offered for sale originated from illegal archaeological digs. At the same time, the market is being flooded by forgeries. Museums need to carefully review the records of ownership of Nok objects to avoid these pitfalls. Minneapolis Institute of Arts www.artsconnected.org
